Since the first can
A wallpaper cleaner, a teacher's idea and a smell that made it into the trademark books. This is how a can of dough became a part of growing up.
- 1930s
It starts on the wall
Kutol Products in Cincinnati makes a soft putty for cleaning soot off wallpaper. Homes heated by coal need it every winter.
- 1950s
A teacher has an idea
With cleaner heating, wallpaper cleaner isn't needed so much. A nursery school teacher uses the putty for crafts, and the McVicker family reworks it as a toy for kids.
- 1956
Play-Doh goes on sale
The first cans of Play-Doh reach toy shelves. There is one color: off-white.
- 1957
Red, yellow and blue
Three bright colors join the original, and the can starts to look the way you remember it.
- 1991
Joining Hasbro
Play-Doh becomes part of Hasbro, and the playsets grow — from the Fun Factory press to whole kitchens.
- 2018
A smell, officially
The Play-Doh scent is registered as a trademark: sweet, slightly musky and vanilla-like, with a hint of cherry and salted wheat dough.

Still popping lids
Classic cans sit next to Kitchen Creations, character sets, Blooms bouquet kits, scented slime and air dry clay. This site gathers the current range in one place.
Everything we make still starts the same way: a can, a lid, a pop. Browse every shelf or say hello on Knock on the lid.
